The Jailbreak Kid

We all spent some quality time out in the patio this afternoon: Charlotte daydreamed, Max munched away at the unlimited salad bar, and Blackie poured over blueprints for building a private tunnel to freedom.

Blackie Plots His Escape

It’s amazing to me that once upon a time, both Max and Blackie could be trusted to sit on the front stoop with me in our unfenced front yard back in Denver, and never once made a break for it.

Blackie and Max in Denver

Times change, apparently!

Charlotte, who has always lived here in Barrington, loves the idea of a solo jaunt herself now and then, and will, like Blackie, pull a Houdini over (or under) the fence from time to time. However, once she’s in the greater outdoors, she tends to get spooked pretty quickly—as shown in this breakfast table doodle from last summer.

Home At Last

All this talk about breaking free of fences is making me think how swell it would be to just play hooky tomorrow, blow off the studio, and go to an afternoon matinee. (Sounds pretty tempting, doesn’t it?)

Happy Thursday Night, and have a wonderful Friday, however you spend it!

  1. I was always amazed that Max and Blackie stuck around the house when you let them out in Denver. Unlimited salad bar…LOL!

I know—me, too! It seems like a dream or something (as does the whole Denver experience, some days), i.e., that we would have these “unleashed” strolls around the yard together every day.

I tried that with Blackie when I first moved to Barrington, and in 2 seconds, all I could see was a blur of running cat, making for the wooded lot—super thick with growth and impassable to humans. He’d come sauntering back after, like, 4 hours. Yikes! (We have fox and other wild creatures loitering about, so I’d worry).

So now they only get to go out into the prison yard for their daily exercise, and only with supervision. (Though Max gets more leeway—too fat to scale the fence.)
